A day trip to Lille

On numerous occasions I have jumped on the Eurostar opting for bigger cities in France, like Paris, or the chocolate gem that is Brussels. However, back in the spring of 2022, when Eurostar were running a sale, I decided to try out a smaller city heading to the quaint Lille for 24 hours.

With a journey time of just 1 hour 20 mins from London and with all the sights within the city being relatively close together, Lille is easily a fun day out for all.

La Grand Place
Head to La Grand Place, the main square in the city, offering an abundance of architecture ranging from 17th-20th century.

The square provides a perfect location to appreciate the building facades, whilst people watching and enjoying a glass of wine.

Le Ville Bourse
The Ville Bourse, the old stock exchange, its considered to be the cities finest building, made up of 24 houses around an arched courtyard.

You can often find a second hand book market, chess players and in the summer tango demonstrations.

Porte de Paris
Take a stroll out of the main square to Porte de Paris. This impressive monumental gate was built in the 17th century to commemorate Louis XVI’s capture of the city.

Citadelle de Lille
Within Lille’s largest park, you will find the Citadelle de Lille. Built by order of Louis XIV, on conquering the city this pentagonal Citadelle is made of 60 million bricks.

It now serves as headquarters of the 12 nation, NATO certified Rapid Reaction Corps.

Eglise Saint-Maurice
Eglise Saint-Maurice located in the historic centre of the city began construction in the 14th century, yet was not completed until the 19th century after being extended over four centuries.

Old Lille
The city offers quaint French vibes, with cobbled streets and chocolate shops galore.

When visiting the city I spent the vast majority of my time strolling through the old town, taking in the flamboyant architecture, dipping into the various shops, cafes and bars.

If a day is all you have to explore the city, you will find yourself enchanted by the city. So take time to slow the place and enjoy everything it has to offer.
